Sinop, Turkey’s northernmost point known for its historic and cultural elements as well as significant nature parks like Erfelek Tatlıca Waterfalls, Akliman, and Hamsilos, hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and is optimistic about the 2024 tourism season. The city will continue to host cruise ships this year, and the fully restored Historical Prison and Museum will be opened to the public in all its parts. Additionally, the city’s historic castle walls, which have also been restored, will begin welcoming visitors in the new period. Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism, Metin Süren, told an AA correspondent that Sinop achieved its goal of surpassing 1.5 million visitors in 2023.
Süren emphasized that for the new year, they have set a target to exceed 2 million visitors, and they are working to activate alternative tourism sources to achieve this. He believes that the nature and cultural routes created for visitors will significantly contribute to increasing visitor numbers, saying:
“With alternative tourism sources, our province, which has tourism diversity throughout the four seasons, has begun to receive a large number of visitors in recent years. Partially opening the Historical Prison for visits, activating alternative tourism sources, and offering destinations as routes to tourists are increasing our visitor numbers each year. Of course, having 15 cruise ships visit our province was also a significant factor. Approximately 15,000 foreign tourists arrived with these 15 ships, allowing us to exceed our 1.5 million visitor target and close out 2023.”
“WE EXPECT OVER 2 MILLION VISITORS”
Süren indicated that expectations are high for the 2024 tourism season, stating, “We expect to exceed 2 million visitors in 2024. It might even reach 2.5 million. We have made our destination plans accordingly. We have identified all alternative tourism routes throughout the province.”
Highlighting the advantage of being a natural harbor city for cruise tourism, Süren noted, “The routine ship sailing the Black Sea is planned to make over 20 trips to Sinop in the new year, but preparations are ongoing in case European ships coming to Galataport, Istanbul, enter the Black Sea and Sinop.”
