Will there be a surge of diaspora tourists during Eid al-Fitr?

Diaspora remains a key driver

Turkish citizens residing overseas continue to play a significant role in the country’s tourism performance. In 2025, Turkey welcomed approximately 63.9 million visitors, including both foreign nationals and members of the diaspora.

During religious holidays and the summer season, these travellers account for a notable share of cross-border movement, often providing a stable source of demand.

Short holiday, strong movement

Although the Eid holiday is relatively brief, it typically leads to a spike in travel activity. Industry estimates suggest that holiday periods can generate millions of journeys nationwide, though only part of this demand is reflected in hotel occupancy, as many visitors stay with family.

Even so, the increased movement supports regional tourism and helps stimulate early-season activity across the country.

Factors shaping demand

Several factors are expected to influence diaspora travel this year. Transport connections between Europe and Turkey remain strong, enabling short-term visits.

Currency differences continue to make spending in Turkey more attractive for those earning abroad, while the cultural importance of Eid sustains demand for family travel.

However, the short duration of the holiday and rising transport costs may limit the scale of arrivals compared with the peak summer season.

Outlook for the season

While Eid alone is unlikely to match the peak summer period, it is widely seen as an early indicator of demand trends. A moderate increase in diaspora arrivals is expected, providing a timely boost to the sector and helping shape expectations for the 2026 tourism season.
