Serving as a sports and exhibition venue between 1988 and 1996, the Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar Sports and Exhibition Hall was transformed into an international convention center after the United Nations selected Istanbul to host the Habitat II Conference in 1996. Following this transformation, it was renamed the Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Center and began serving the tourism and meetings industry.
