Ottoman legacy in Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Sokullu Mehmed Pasha Bridge

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) began restoration in 2010 to repair damages on the bridge, with the technical acceptance of the restoration completed in 2019. This bridge project, one of TİKA’s largest restoration efforts in the Balkans, has helped preserve the shared cultural heritage in the country and ensured the bridge’s legacy for future generations.

Today, the bridge, which dazzles onlookers with its original splendor, was added to UNESCO’s “World Heritage List” in 2007.

TİKA places great importance on the restoration of ancestral heritage sites in the Balkans, where the Ottoman Empire ruled for 550 years, aiming to preserve and rejuvenate historical legacies, pass them on to future generations, and support the culture of coexistence in a region marked by ethnic and religious diversity.
