Minister Uraloğlu: “We Renovated Using the Latest Technologies”
In his statement, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said: “I would like to thank you for attending the inauguration ceremony of the second runway and its complementary facilities at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, one of our country’s most important international gateways. Under the leadership of our President and during the 21-year period of AK Party governments, we have taken our country to a new level in all modes of transport — road, railway, aviation, and maritime. The 100th anniversary of our Republic has also been a year in which we inaugurated numerous transportation projects serving every corner of Turkey.
“We Are Advancing Towards the Century of Turkey with Confidence”
We inaugurated many major projects together with our President, including the Zigana Tunnel, the longest twin-tube road tunnel in Europe, the Yeni Foça Yacht Marina, and an 89 km section of the Aydın-Denizli highway. We are advancing towards the Turkey Century with confident steps.
We take great pride and joy in bidding farewell to the 100th anniversary of our Republic with a new monumental work. Sabiha Gökçen Airport needed a significant capacity increase due to growing passenger numbers and rising demand from our citizens. We have renovated the airport’s infrastructure covering 19,000 square meters — including a 3,540-meter runway suitable for wide-body aircraft, three taxiways, a cargo apron with a capacity for 40 planes, an air traffic control tower, a fire station, and a vehicle facility — using the latest technologies of our era.
“In Time, We Will Increase This Capacity Up to 2.5 Times”
Starting today, for optimal air traffic efficiency, we will use the new runway for landings and the existing runway for takeoffs. This will at least double the air traffic capacity of Sabiha Gökçen Airport, and in time, we aim to increase it up to 2.5 times.
Establishing a safe, economical, comfortable, and fast transportation infrastructure that enhances citizens’ quality of life has always been a core goal of our Ministry. We are ready for the Turkey Century, and by crowning this century with many more projects and services, we will make it a century of transportation, God willing.
I extend my gratitude to our President and fellow Ministers. I would also like to thank all contractor companies, from top to bottom, all employees of the state airline, and the Presidency of Defense Industries for successfully completing the second runway and complementary facilities of Sabiha Gökçen Airport. May the airport bring many blessings.”
