Turkey Ranks Fifth Globally in Tourist Overnight Stays

Turkey ranked fifth globally in the number of overnight stays at accommodation facilities, with a total of 203 million stays by domestic and international tourists.

Turkey Ranks Fifth Globally in Tourist Overnight Stays

According to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Turkey recorded 203,187,958 overnight stays in accommodation facilities in 2023. Of this, 130.6 million were by foreign tourists and 72.6 million by domestic travelers, making Turkey the fifth-highest globally in overnight stays, following Spain, France, Germany, and Italy.

Antalya: A Global Leader in Overnight Stays

Antalya emerged as the leader in Turkey with an impressive 94 million overnight stays, comprising 81.6 million by foreign tourists and 12.5 million by domestic travelers. This figure not only places Antalya at the top within Turkey but also ranks it second globally, trailing only Spain’s Canary Islands.

  • Istanbul follows with 29.7 million overnight stays (22.3 million foreign and 7.3 million domestic).
  • Muğla takes third place with 16.2 million stays (10.8 million foreign and 5.4 million domestic).

Preferred Districts by Tourists

Certain districts in Turkey have become hotspots for specific nationalities:

  • German tourists favored Antalya’s Kemer, Alanya, Serik (Belek), Manavgat (Side), Aksu (Kundu), and Muratpaşa (Lara); Muğla’s Bodrum and Ortaca; İzmir’s Menderes; and Aydın’s Kuşadası.
  • Russian tourists preferred Antalya’s Kemer, Alanya, Serik, Manavgat, Aksu, and Muratpaşa; Istanbul’s Fatih and Beyoğlu; and Muğla’s Bodrum and Marmaris.
  • British tourists mainly visited Antalya and Muğla, with Alanya, Marmaris, Manavgat, Aksu, Serik, Bodrum, Fethiye, Ortaca, Muratpaşa, and Kemer as top destinations.
  • Polish tourists often stayed in Alanya, Manavgat, Kemer, Bodrum, Serik, Kuşadası, Didim, Marmaris, Aksu, and Selçuk.
  • Iranian tourists, the fifth-largest group, favored Istanbul’s Beyoğlu, Şişli, and Fatih, as well as Aksu, Serik, Kemer, Muratpaşa, Kuşadası, and Alanya.

The significant rise in overnight stays underscores Turkey’s growing appeal as a global tourism hub. Antalya’s remarkable performance highlights its international competitiveness, while Istanbul and Muğla continue to draw millions of visitors, strengthening Turkey’s position on the global tourism map.
