Key Highlights from TTYD Chairperson Oya Narin’s Speech at the 21st Ordinary Financial General Assembly

Tourism Success in Turkey’s Centennial Year

Oya Narin emphasized Turkey’s remarkable recovery from challenges like the pandemic and earthquakes, achieving significant milestones in 2023, the centennial year of the Republic:

  • Hosting 57 million tourists and generating $56 billion in revenue.
  • Ranking among the top 4 global tourism destinations with diverse source markets and offerings.
  • Istanbul became the most-visited city globally, with over 20 million visitors, while Antalya ranked 4th.

The Need for Transformation in Tourism

Narin highlighted the potential for greater economic contributions from the tourism sector, as outlined in TTYD’s 2020 “Tourism Transformation Report”:

  • By implementing structural adaptation policies, tourism revenues could reach $135 billion by 2033, increasing tourism’s share of GDP from the current 5% to 7.5%.

Role as Investors and Tourism Diplomacy Representatives

  • TTYD is actively engaging with $800 billion worth of projects in regions like the Arabian Peninsula, the Basra Gulf, and the Red Sea, where competition in tourism is intensifying.
  • The association aims to enhance Turkey’s position in the global tourism market while contributing to major projects as both investors and tourism diplomacy representatives.

Advancing Financial and Investment Models

  • TTYD is working to improve access to alternative financing sources, aiming to diversify investments, adopt new financial models, and foster growth and employment in the sector.
  • Establishing competitive and advantageous financing structures is crucial for achieving the sector’s goals.

Importance of Branding in Tourism

  • Both domestic and international brands play a key role in transforming Turkey’s tourism sector.
  • Turkey currently hosts 60 hotel chains (44 domestic and 16 international), with 517 hotels under their operations.
  • To boost competitiveness, domestic hotel chains must increase their visibility abroad, supported by measures like scaling operations and diversifying incentives.
  • Narin proposed applying VAT exemptions for the tourism sector, similar to other exporters, to enhance its economic impact.

Looking Ahead: Tourism Investment Forum 2024 (TIF 2024)

Narin concluded by announcing the 4th Tourism Investment Forum (TIF 2024), which will take place on November 26-27, 2024. This forum aims to solidify Turkey’s leadership in global tourism investments and serve as a reference point for the industry.

Narin’s speech underscored TTYD’s commitment to fostering sustainable growth, innovation, and global competitiveness in Turkey’s tourism sector.
